The Middle School curriculum is designed to enable students to succeed in high school, college, and beyond. All students are required to take science, math, social studies, literature, Spanish, grammar and composition. Eighth grade students begin their Upper School math curriculum by taking Algebra I. They also enroll in American Studies, an interdisciplinary class that encourages students to interpret primary documents, read historical fiction and non-fiction, and complete research projects.
All classes are college preparatory and rigorous, while taking into account the individual needs and the age and maturity of the students. Emphasis is placed on process—how to learn and how to study—as well as on content. In addition, students are encouraged to broaden their horizons through drama, studio art, weight training, critical thinking, and music classes. Students have the opportunity to participate in programs like MathCounts, Science Olympiad, PAGE Academic Bowl, the spelling bee, science and geography fairs, essay contests and a wide variety of popular sports.
