Middle School Curriculum

The Middle School curriculum is designed to enable students to succeed in high school, college, and beyond. All students are required to take science, math, social studies, literature, Spanish, grammar and composition. Eighth grade students begin their Upper School math curriculum by taking Algebra I. They also enroll in American Studies, an interdisciplinary class that encourages students to interpret primary documents, read historical fiction and non-fiction, and complete research projects.

All classes are college preparatory and rigorous, while taking into account the individual needs, the age and maturity of the students. Emphasis is placed on process—how to learn and how to study—as well as on content. In addition, students are encouraged to broaden their horizons through drama, studio art, weight training, technology, and music classes. Students have the opportunity to participate in programs like MathCounts, the spelling bee, geography fair, essay contests, and a wide variety of popular sports.

Upper School Curriculum

Valwood is proud to offer AP courses across all departments and college classes taught on Valwood’s campus. Seniors may also dually enroll through Wiregrass Georgia Technical College. The rigorous nature of Valwood’s curriculum ensures that upon graduation all students are thoroughly prepared for any academic demands they will encounter at their chosen university.

Summer Reading Lists & Assignments

Valwood School recognizes that student enrichment continues through the summer, even when school is not in session. Students entering third grade through twelfth are assigned summer reading projects. Third grade through seventh grade students read one novel and complete an assignment along with a math packet. Eighth grade through twelfth grade students are required to read two novels and complete the assignment provided by their instructor.
