College Counseling
College Counseling at Valwood School
Valwood School’s college counseling program provides students with personalized guidance from the moment they enter Upper School. Underclassmen and their families have the option to meet with our Director of College Counseling, Katherine Ross, individually each spring to discuss academic planning and long-term goals, and they participate in our annual College Road Trips each February. During these three-day experiences, ninth and tenth grade students visit approximately six college campuses, gaining exposure to a variety of academic environments and campus cultures. By the time students reach junior year, most have toured up to twelve campuses, helping them develop a clear sense of the types of colleges and communities where they can thrive.
The program is designed to help students identify, apply to, and gain admission to colleges that match their interests, strengths, and goals. Equally important is fostering decision-making, self-advocacy, and organizational skills, which prepare students for independence in college and beyond. Beginning in junior year, students receive structured one-on-one counseling, including meetings that involve families, to build college lists and reflect on fit. This individualized guidance continues into senior year, where students are supported through every stage of the application process—from essays and resumes to application submissions. The program is led by Katherine Ross, who brings meaningful experience in independent schools and holds a Master of Education in Independent School Leadership from Vanderbilt University. Having worked in both day and boarding schools in the Washington, D.C. area, Mrs. Ross ensures students have thoughtful, informed support as they navigate this important transition.
