HAHIRA, GA – September 22, 2025 – Valwood School proudly welcomed 17 new members into the Juan José Arévalo Chapter of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH) — the Spanish Honor Society — during its fourth induction ceremony on Monday, September 22. Founded in 2023, the chapter recognizes high-achieving students who have demonstrated excellence in the study of Spanish language and culture.
To be eligible for membership in the SHH, students must be actively enrolled in an upper-level Spanish class (Spanish III or higher), have a cumulative Spanish average of 90 or higher, and must demonstrate character, leadership, honesty, and service. Brian Crouch, Valwood’s Upper School Spanish teacher, and the society’s advisor said “I am thrilled that our school celebrates students who excel in their Spanish classes. The Spanish program is thriving at Valwood School.” During the ceremony, Mr. Crouch was assisted by co-presidents, William Holloway and Annabel Musgrove, and Chad Gallahan, Upper School Dean.
This year’s inductees are Jenna Foster, Carolyn Griner, Jane Hinton, Leyton Hobby, Charlotte Holloway, Ansley Holmes, Gavin Lain, Bailie Murphy, Samuel Ofori, Abby O'Neal, Kennedy Paylo, Ellyse Persaud, Evan Schert, Emma Shapiro, Winter Simpson, Vanessa Smith, and Julia Soshnik.
After receiving their membership certificates, Mr. Crouch presented several awards. The first award was the Certificado de Excelencia, an award given to graduating members who have demonstrated excellence in the study of Spanish. These individuals have consistently shown dedication to acquiring, understanding, and communicating in the language. They go beyond simply completing assignments, striving instead for deeper comprehension and continual growth. Their commitment has set a strong example of what it means to pursue Spanish with both skill and determination. This year’s recipients are Libby Carroll, Aahna Mattis, and Will Trickett.
Next was the Certificado de Excelencia Distinguido, reserved for a graduating member whose pursuit of Spanish has gone beyond normal acquisition and learning. Beyond consistent achievement, this student has demonstrated remarkable understanding and mastery of the language. Their work reflects not only excellence in the classroom, but also a passion for embracing Spanish as a language and as a discipline. What sets this student apart is their drive to truly understand Spanish. This year’s recipient is Brody Burch.
The third award of the day was the Premio de Servicio, an award given to graduating members who demonstrated notable community service to others through their involvement in the Spanish language program. Each of these individuals has given their time and energy beyond the requirements of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica and Valwood, taking time away from their own lives to directly impact Spanish-speaking communities. Their willingness to serve in this way reflects humility and a dedication that strengthens both our program and the communities they touched. This year’s recipients are Louden Castor, Destyn Lain, Tyler Sadler, and Devin Williams.
The Premio de Servicio Distinguido award is reserved for a graduating member who, in addition to every quality already described in the premio de servicio, has gone above and beyond in leadership and service in the application of Spanish directly to people and communities. They have not only given their time but set the standard for others by serving with excellence and a spirit that embodies the very best of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica and Valwood. This year’s recipient is, Jack Melendez.
The final award of the morning was the Premio de Honor. This award is given to an individual who not only excels in the classroom but distinguishes himself as a model learner and member of the community. It is awarded to the individual who embodies all the characteristics of the Sociedad Honoria Hispánica which are character, leadership, honesty, and service. This student demonstrates exceptional strength of character and integrity both in the classroom and in the community. He will not only be recognized by this chapter with the medal of distinction at graduation but will also be nationally recognized by their addition to the Sociedad Honoria Hispánica’s list of distinguished graduates. This year’s recipient is Jed Respess.
"The success of our Spanish program continues to be unmatched in the area. Valwood is not only the single comprehensive K–12 Spanish program in Lowndes County, but we are also thriving beyond that distinction. Our proficiency scores exceed national averages, we have continued to expand course offerings, and we provide two immersive learning experiences. This success is a testament to our students and their dedication. They are living proof of Valwood’s commitment to academics, character, and service, and I am honored to be part of it." Crouch said.
