Valwood commemorates 50th year

April 22, 2018

HAHIRA — Valwood School is observing its 50th year of existence.

The school recently took a moment to remember the progress the institution has made during the past 50 years, according to school officials.

Head of School John L. Davis Sr. made remarks at a time capsule burying ceremony.

“It is up to us as faculty, staff, parents, alumni and students to embrace our culture and traditions to ensure our future is bright,” he said. “We will constantly strive for new levels of excellence and keep our ambitious goals.”

Burying a time capsule gets everyone at the school involved with leaving a little piece of history for future Valiants, according to school officials.

Many of the time-capsule items were put together or made by classes. The items include a Pete the Cat book signed by the pre-K classes, signed bookmarks, play programs, a fidget spinner, painted rocks, a national championship cup and ticket, solar eclipse glasses, slime, Valwood decals, class trip shirts, a football program, an I-phone box, an election flier and a cookie tin featuring a photo of the senior class with a list of popular songs from the year.

Also included is a current newspaper and various 50th anniversary items and Valwood memorabilia.

The time capsule was lowered into its resting place beneath the Crane Hall cupola by Davis and Officer Les Bunte.

April Scruggs, chairman of the Valwood board of trustees, Gabby Moss, a junior and yearbook editor, and Brooker Anderson, a third-generation legacy student, ceremoniously shoveled the first layer of dirt onto the time capsule.

Following the ceremony, the observance continued with birthday cake and music to mark Valwood’s 50 years.
