For the last 5 years, Valwood's Advanced Placement Chemistry students have taken part in the National Chemistry Olympiad. The first round is a test written by the American Chemical Society and given regionally in every state. For the fifth year in a row, Valwood has qualified two students to move on to the state competition. Junior, John Elliott won first place on the region test, and Junior, Anna Jordan placed third. John is the son of Walter and Laura Elliott.  Anna is the daughter of Norman and Marianne Jordan.
