Brenna Wilson is the recipient of the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor given by the Girl Scouts of America. The award is granted to Girl Scouts who have discovered their unique talents and have a passion to share their ideas with their communities.

Pryor to receiving the Gold Award, Brenna earned the Silver and Bronze awards. To complete the final project for the Gold award, Brenna chose pet safety in the Lowndes County area. The project addressed the lack of information available to pet owners regarding the threat of harmful poisons and toys.

Brenna set up a booth at Valdosta's First Annual Animal Shelter Health Fair for the purpose of informing pet owners about pet safety. Brenna drew from the leadership skills she acquired as a Girl Scout to train a group of her friends and classmates who volunteered to help man the booth.

When asked how her project would be sustained beyond her involvement, Brenna said, "I prepared pet safety brochures with information gained from local veterinarians and the ASPCA website." Local veterinarians are displaying Brenna's brochure in their offices and, the brochure is spreading nationally. The North Florida Progressive Animal Welfare Society has begun distributing the brochures locally and is sharing it with branches across the nation. The project will also live on as a Valwood Upper School service project.

When asked how she had personally benefited from her work on the project, Brenna said, "I gained valuable experience in leading a team of volunteers, interacting with the public, and improving my interview skills."

Brenna is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Steve Wilson of Valdosta.
