Valwood's middle school is a three year program, including grades six, seven, and eight, dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, and the intellectual and moral development of students. The middle school years represent a bridge between the security of a teacher-centered lower school and the rigors of a subject-centered upper school and increasing learner independence. Teachers work together as a team to address social and emotional, as well as academic issues.

The middle school academic curriculum is designed to enable students to succeed in high school, college, and beyond. All students are required to take science, math, social studies, literature, grammar and composition, and some will take Upper School courses in Spanish. Eighth grade students begin their upper school math curriculum by taking Algebra I. All classes are college preparatory and rigorous, while taking into account the individual needs of students. Emphasis is placed on process, how to learn and how to study, as well as on content. In addition, students are encouraged to broaden their horizons through creative expression with classes in drama, studio art, computers, and music, including strings instruction and choral music. Sixth and seventh graders take a Spanish as one of their enrichment classes.

Each grade has field trips spanning from 3-5 days to various locales including Washington, D.C.,the Amish country in Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Florida, Rock Eagle, and Andersonville.  Middle school students also have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of athletics, and all who wish to participate on a team may.  The Student Council organizes dances throughout the year as well as a talent show and other activites that raise money for local charities.
