Beyond the Classroom - Mrs. Hale Receives Keep Valdosta Beautiful Grant

Valwood Kindergarten teacher, Lisa Hale, is the recipient of  a $500.00 award from the Keep Lowndes Valdosta Beautiful Environmental Beautification Grant.  Mrs. Hale will use the funds to implement her  "Little Sprouts" garden project.

The Kindergarten class will plant and tend the garden, learning how much hard work and attention is required to produce the food we eat.   Equally important, the students will learn the critical lesson of preserving our environment for future production of food and flowers.

Kindergarten students will be involved in every phase of the gardening process.  Prior to planting seeds the students will use hoes to cultivate the soil and then be responsible for watering the young plants.  A little help from Mrs. Hale and parent volunteers will facilitate the tilling and fertilizing. Organizing rows and proper spacing as well as labeling the plants will be included the in students' duties.  Throughout the spring, students will be weeding the garden with the rewarding process of harvesting their vegetables and flowers beginning  in May.

The "Little Sprouts" garden will be located near the entrance of the school for the enjoyment of the students, faculty and parents.
