If roughing it in the great outdoors is not enough to build character, just add heavy rain and a wrong turn. Valwood's ninth grade embarked on the annual camping and hiking trip with expectations of the usual challenges and fun, but in spite of a rainy forecast, no one knew just how soggy conditions would become.
Upon arriving at the Franklin D. Roosevelt(FDR) State Park near Dawson, Georgia the group began unloading and carting all the food, tents, supplies and personal gear into the campsite. Thirty one freshmen divided into two groups. One group set up tents and the other assembled the kitchen complete with a hanging tarp covering the entire cooking area. Luckily this was accomplished expeditiously as rain came soon and often. Next the campers set out on an exploratory three mile hike, but due to a wrong turn were provided with about 5 miles of sightseeing. Returning to camp, cooks prepared spaghetti with garlic bread, the fire crew collected wood, and others relaxed and played some football in an open field.
The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, each student packed a lunch and backpacks in preparation for the seven mile hike. The hikers stopped for lunch at a waterfall and most took advantage of the pooled water to freshen up. "The members of the Class of 2013 are terrific hikers. We quickly finished the trip, and returned to camp for dinner followed by a campfire." said Mr. Glassmire.
Day three began with another fortifying breakfast and the packing of lunches for the trail; a shorter trek this time, but with a twist. Each student started one at a time with approximately two minutes between each. This allowed the students a chance to truly be alone with their thoughts and see the surroundings without the distractions of others. The chaperones spaced themselves along the trail to assure that no one took a wrong turn, and all arrived safely and happily at the FDR State Park entrance. Following lunch at the panoramic overlook, the group toured the FDR museum at the Little White House in Warm Springs. The class received numerous compliments on their behavior and appreciation of the historic setting. Ms. Dewar had reminded them to mind their manners, and they did.
Back at camp, a final cloud burst presented challenges for the cooks as they tried to prepare quesadillas while emptying the gathering water from the tarp above the stoves. "A student served me a quesadilla that had been subject to the rain (wet corner), but it was still yummy. " reported Ms. Dewar. Eventually the rain subsided long enough for the gathering of wood and a cozy fire. Everyone held their wet sleeping bags near the fire to dry and for the third night, enjoyed smores and good conversation.
Several students commented on the unity the class experienced as a result of being away from the normal school setting and expressed hope that they would carry the unity and the lessons learned back to campus.
Some say hardship builds character. While the campers enjoyed their trip, they certainly endured some hardships. Their positive attitudes and ability to make the best of less than perfect conditions exemplifies the strong character that is a part of the everyday experience at Valwood.
