2003-2004 marked Valwood's reentry into Mock Trial after a seven-year hiatus.
A student Mock Trial team is composed of 14 participants: Six trial lawyers, six witnesses, and two timers. In addition, teams may enter a court artist. Attorney coaches train students. The case manual for the given year is distributed in December and teams work to prepare for a region competition held in late February or early March.
At the time of the competition, each team is divided into a prosecution squad and a defense squad. Each squad has three lawyers, three witnesses and a timer. The prosecution squad faces another high school's defense squad, and the defense squad faces some other school's prosecution squad. The evaluators are real-life attorneys who evaluate the participants (attorneys and witnesses) as they serve as jurors.
