Valwood Team Advances to State
Valwood was represented by six teams at the Regional Odyssey of the Mind Competition held in Savannah in March. Odyssey of the Mind is a world-wide competition that promotes creative problem solving and teamwork.
Valwood's Road Rally Team placed third at the regional competition which qualified them to advance to the state competition which will be held on April 16th at Columbus State University in Columbus, GA. The team had to design, build, and operate an original vehicle, which they drove in a road rally that had four checkpoints. At each checkpoint, the vehicle had to compete in a sports-related event- soccer, fishing, ping pong, and boxing. The team used simple machines such as levers, crossbows, and ramps, in order to accomplish each task. Valwood's team chose the popular Wii video game system as its theme.
The team members are Levi Johnson, Holden McGlothlin, Jake Parris, Jimmy Mossell, Evan Creamer, and Maggie Smith. They were coached by Kim and Steve Johnson. If the team places at the state competition, they will advance to the World Finals, being held at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland.
