Valiants shut out Knights

Valiants score 35 in three quarters, shutout Knights

VALDOSTA –– The Valwood Valiants (5-3, 2-1 Region 3-3A) scored 21 of their 35 points in the third quarter as they steamrolled the Deerfield-Windsor Knights 35-0 on Friday in Albany.

For the Valiants, it was their record fifth shutout this season.

After forcing the Knights three-and-out to start the second half, the Valiants’ Colby Thomas blocked a Deerfield punt. Linebacker Jaharie Boone recovered for the Valiants and took it in for a touchdown with 10:18 left in the third quarter to start the run.

Nearly six minutes later, Valwood quarterback Caleb Burns connected with Cam Walker on a three- yard touchdown pass to make it 28-0 with 4:25 left in the third.

With 20 seconds left in the third, Burns found running back Sam Martin for a 24-yard touchdown. John Miller’s extra point created the final margin.

In the second quarter, Valiants struck again. On third-and-goal from the four-yard line, Valwood quarterback Caleb Burns handed off to Cam Walker on a jet sweep for a four-yard touchdown run with 11:08 to go in the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead.

With a 14-point cushion in the second, the Valiants looked to go ahead by three scores as Burns hit Walker on a 30-yard touchdown pass. The strike was wiped away, however, as the Valiants were called for a holding penalty to negate the touchdown, taking the Valiants into the locker room up 14-0.

On the first Deerfield possession of the game, the Valiants recovered a botched snap on fourth down to take over at the seven-yard line in Deerfield territory.

As has been the case much of the season, the Valiants wasted no time getting on the board as Valiants running back Sam Martin punched in a one-yard touchdown score on fourth-and-goal to put the Valiants ahead 7-0 in the first quarter.

With the win, the Valiants extended their winning streak against the Knights to three games while also snapping the Knights’ two-game winning streak.

The Valiants return home next Friday as they host the Tiftarea Panthers at 7:30.
